Megumi is a minor character in the Guilty Gear series. She is Axl Low's girlfriend from the 20th century, who has been waiting for his return since he mysteriously disappeared due to his "time-slips".

Design[]

Megumi is fair-skinned and has waist-length, straight black hair. She is always seen sporting a white dress. Though her face is usually obscured, in STRIVE, the visible parts of Megumi's face show that she has black eyes and a mole on her left cheek.

Personality[]

Little is known of her personality; however, Megumi seems to be a very understanding sort of person. According to Axl, even if he abandoned the current timeline[2]—destroying it[3]—just to return to her side, she is the kind of girl who would smile and tell him "It must've been such a tough decision."[2] She believes her boyfriend to be a "weird one" but loves him deeply.[4]

Story[]

Born sometime in the 20th century,[5] Megumi lived in London, England,[1][6] where she met a man in the slums, Axl Low, who was the son of a wealthy man and his wife,[4] and who took it upon himself to end gang assault on his neighborhood through fighting.[1] Although Megumi believed him to be weird, everyone always ended up on his side in the end, including herself. Whatever the reason, they fell in love, and swore their futures to one another, throwing away their old lives and names.[4]

Although Megumi believed they were happy,[4] Axl suddenly disappeared[1][4] on May 14, 1998,[6] without saying a word to anyone. He never came back, and no cop or journalist could ever tell her why, but Megumi made herself a promise that she would never forget her memories with Axl.[4]

Unbeknownst to Megumi, his disappearance[3] (and presumably, the timeline divergence) was caused by her being chosen as an "irregularity" by the Backyard. Humanity's desire for a brighter tomorrow during the Crusades resulted in the Backyard becoming a Magical Foci; the Backyard interpreted this as an error that would destroy the world and sealed that conscious away[7] in Megumi. Even so the world was being torn from its origin, and on verge of ascending to godhood, The Original took away half of her power, which resulted in Megumi becoming I-No.[8]

In December 2187, with fuzzy memories of "Will" and the first version of the 20th century, I-No wants to get out of her "empty cage", and has Happy Chaos restore her to godhood with the Tome of Origin. However, everyone present—including Axl himself—opposes her ascension. During the final battle, I-No realizes that Axl is her beloved Will from an alternate timeline as she is being destroyed by Sol's Saint Oratorio. In her final moments and likely with the last of her power, I-No trades places with her alternate past self. As a result, Megumi is brought to the current timeline. At a park, Megumi appears behind Axl and repeats what I-No told her to say, "I'm giving you my unfair way of life. You asked for this." Megumi then asks if he truly is Axl. He then turns to face Megumi, smiling tearfully as he recognizes her.[9]

Trivia[]

  • There was a fan theory that Megumi was the vengeful ghost S-Ko that possessed Zappa due to their similar appearances and battling Zappa to get Axl's first (likely non-canon) ending in Λ Core Plus in which he briefly sees Megumi before being cruelly flung through time yet again.[10]
